1. Why do you only deal with kiln dried eastern white pine shavings? Aren’t there other types of wood available in a shaving for animal litter?
Kiln-dried Eastern white pine shavings are more absorbent than other kinds of wood, and because they are more absorbent than the alternatives (e.g. southern yellow pine, spruce, poplar) they last longer in the stall or barn before becoming saturated. Since they last longer, the customer can change the litter less frequently, resulting in more savings over other shavings types. This superior absorbency provides the most bang for the buck.
Our shavings are a product of the lumber manufacturing process and are made when kiln dried rough lumber is planed down to produce boards for the building trades. This product results in a light, often fluffy product that is highly absorbent.
Because our shavings are produced at a network of different mills, the shavings structure and composition vary from producer to producer, depending on the equipment used at each mill. Although some shavings have more “fines” than others, we would not classify these shavings as “dusty” and neither would our customers that prefer these “denser” grade shavings.
We deal only in bagged shavings. Like your local grocery store, we offer shavings in paper or plastic bags.
The most common sized bale of shavings is 3.25 cubic feet compressed, which expands to approximately 8 cubic feet. The average horse stall will require approximately 4 bales to cover it with an adequate 3-4 inch deep layer of shavings.
A fully loaded 53-foot long trailer will hold about 1,000 to 1,200 bales of shavings.
Anything is possible! However, due to logistics and freight costs it may not be cost-effective to purchase a half load or some other fraction of a trailer. We often make arrangements with our customers to leave a trailer for a period of time until it is unloaded, and would be happy to discuss the cost associated with this.
The price of our shavings is dependent on a variety of factors, including: market demand, fuel costs, and time to unload. Visit our “request a quote” page and fill out the information requested and we will promptly respond to your inquiry.
We deliver throughout the northeastern, mid-Atlantic and mid-west regions of the US. Our export business is growing and we can provide competitive rates to deliver our products to international destinations in Europe, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and other regions.
